The confrontation between these two cycles was an event just waiting to happen: two monuments, one of vocal music, the other of instrumental, by two composers beset by melancholy, feelings of guilt, remorse and death. Both works are marked by the figure 7, the universal symbol of the completed cycle and of renewal.
